TABLEAU VIVANT LIVING PICTURE
THE 'I'M FLYING SCENE' IN THE FILM TITANIC

The tableau vivant represents a photoshopped image of the iconic 'I'm Flying' scene in the film Titanic. After rebuffing Jack's advances out of obligatory loyalty to her arrogant and abusive fiancé, Rose escapes from a stuffy first-class tea and finds Jack at the end of the gliding ship. "Close your eyes," he tells her, helping her step onto the boat's railing. Once steady, she opens her eyes. "I'm flying," Rose says breathlessly as Jack holds her tightly, interlocking his hands with hers.

The warm background affects the atmosphere and mood of the scene due to the tone of the vivid colours of the daylight sunset. The background is the sea and the sky. This image makes viewers feel emotional and naturally, the producer of the movie would want viewers to root for the couple to make viewers empathise with them.

I recreated this scene by utilising a number of techniques and visual elements in Photoshop such as the use of layers and the transparency function to position and size the original photo over the Titanic image.

Copying parts of the sea and sky background from the Titanic image and layering them over the original shot to create more of the background and cover the previous actress. I used the magic wand, lasso and marquee tools to cut the photo into place including around Leonardo DiCaprio’s hand.

The colour balance function was used to change a black and white photo into a sepia tone to better match the colours on the original image. Lighting and colour were experimented with during this task by using the hue/saturation and brightness/contrast functions to blend the two images together to match the skin colour on the black and white image to the coloured image. The clothing and pose in the original image were intended to better reflect the feel and style of the Titanic era.
