WITHOUT WASTE
CONDELL PARK, SYDNEY
I appreciate our world and the environment and do not want to participate in the transitory destruction of our surroundings. I do not want to leave the resulting mountain of issues to future generations. Following this line of thinking, I have decided to open up my own home-based craft business that aligns with my thoughts about sustainability. I share my passion for crafts and handmade items through candle, quilt, soap and bath bomb workshops across Sydney, Australia. This provides an opportunity to spread the idea of sustainable living.
The business’ main focus is to teach people the art of candle making, handmaking quilts, soaps and bath bombs in a way that is fascinating and uncomplicated. As an experienced expert, I will run the classes. I utilise environmentally friendly materials, which include recycled and recyclable materials, as well as non-toxic ingredients and adhesives. I love taking two or more materials and combining them into something wonderful to be cherished, not just by one, but for generations to come.
My social enterprise creates goods that are free of petroleum-derived chemicals, using natural and sustainable materials to minimise waste while identifying innovative ways of recycling waste.

To run the classes, I set up the clean, bright, third bedroom as an office/craft space for my customers. The open floor plan of the house means you catch a glimpse of it from the front room. One side of the room is the office, and the other side of the room is filled with tables and chairs. I can sit at my table there and still see what is going on in the front room. I coupled a desk with a cabinet hutch as my craft space. Sewing supplies and materials fit neatly behind cabinet doors, and paper tools tuck away securely into the drawer space keeping everything organised.
Every table has a pen holder where all the pens, coloured pencils, and markers, which are organised by type and colour. A cosy, modern grey sofa is situated directly by the window. The patterned cushions add colour and style to the space. The wooden table in the corner is for cutting, ironing, and most importantly taking pictures of the final product. The corkboard at the front of the room is full of pushpins of inspirational images. The board is positioned at eye level for optimal inspiration. Everything has its own space and a label for ease of access.
PROBLEM
WASTE

Waste is a major worldwide problem. As the world's population and living standards grow, so does the amount of waste produced. For a long time, the waste that people produce has been harmful to our ecosystem. Humans produce far too much rubbish and are unable to dispose of it sustainably. Our oceans and landfills are overflowing with non-biodegradable and non-recyclable waste. In 2017, for instance, the Environmental Protection Agency calculated that the total generation of municipal solid waste in the United States just that year was 267.8 million tons.
Compared with 2015 levels, it was a 5.7 million increase. Overall, the quantity of waste produced has several negative effects on the environment: it contributes to the increasing climate problem, has a detrimental influence on animals and the natural environment, and is harmful to our public health. Some waste will decompose eventually, but not all, and while doing so, it may emit bad smells or produce explosive methane gas, which contributes to the greenhouse effect. As waste decomposes, leachate can pollute the environment. Landfills that are not wellmanaged may attract pests and litter
