MITCHISON HOUSE
SOUTH COOGEE, NEW SOUTH WALES
Located in South Coogee, this Mitchison House is an existing terrace house. The clients want a thorough refurbishment of the house, including the bathroom, kitchen, and other living areas, that meets their aesthetics and living characteristics.
A chrome and black floor lamp arcs into a serene silver and white modern living room scheme. Floor to ceiling windows on two sides of the room bathes the pale lounge in natural daylight, which is filtered through sheer white voiles. Neutral curtains frame the glass. The lounge arrangement is held together by a large area rug above light wood laminate flooring. A pair of gunmetal round coffee tables provide a dark sheen in the centre of the lounge rug. The straight sofa provides sociable seating for at least two people. Brown and grey scatter cushions tie in with the colourway of the modern accent chairs at their side. Decorative vases and hefty coffee table books give the large living room a more lived-in feel.
The entire room is flooded with light, flowing in from the glass windows that overlook the backyard. In the stunning backyard, the plants bed down in concrete planters under the tree, whilst smaller specimens grow directly from the grass. Natural light streams down through the backyard, causing highlights and shadows over the undulating panels. The front yard in the entry holds linear beds of grasses and a tree-lined border.

Turning to the right, the space opens wider to a white kitchen. Bold marble centres the kitchen. These veins are specially defined, creating a bigger impression with less material. The opposite side of the kitchen island is equipped with a row of cabinets underneath. The bonsai tree on the bench adds focus. Taupe cabinetry help mix the palette, while the three-pronged light draws the eye. A large charcoal fridge, microwave and chrome oven add a sleek finish, while taupe and white cabinets blending into the walls hide necessities.
Wood effect panels have been applied to the surrounding areas to create uniformity of the walls, interior doors, and some hidden storage. The artwork in this home is on display and easy to spot amid the white decor. The bedrooms are quieter. While the rest of the home is dominated by marble, the bedrooms take a more welcoming approach with warm textiles and soft textures. Nothing is so wonderful as waking up to a sunny room and crisp warm grey sheets. The light wooden floors enlarge the space. Marble makes a grand reappearance in the ensuite. The ensuite’s squared mirror cabinet lines themselves in light wood. A simple glass door separates the shower, as the opposite wall competes with a white and wooden cabinet. Matching the wooden tones, the shower´s beige tiles create a warm ambience, while elements of grey stone and a marbled benchtop remind of Scandinavian roots. Rougher stone gives the shower a more natural aesthetic.
